Fix a Slow Computer : Step-by-step Guide

We all hate when our computer doesn’t perform as it should and we wonder how can we get it to work like new as if we bought it yesterday, well there are some proven methods you can try to optimize and perform better just by following these steps from below but you need to follow these steps correctly and read the whole article if you want some actual results. Follow the steps below

Step Number 1: Power Option

  1. Go to your start menu and search power option.
  2. You will see the power options on the result, just click on it.
  3. You will get to the Control Panel Power Option window.
  4. Here you can see my default power plan is set as Balanced. Change it to High Performance.
  5. Now you can close the power option.

Step Number 2: Disable Unwanted Startup Programs

  1. First, go to the Task Manager.
  2. The easiest way to get to the Task Manager is by clicking on any empty space on your task bar and choosing Task Manager from here.
  3. Once you are at the Task Manager, go to Startup.
  4. Here you will see all the programs that start up automatically when your system starts.
  5. When you install a program in Windows, it may add a small program that runs when Windows starts.
  6. After installing a lot of software, you may experience your boot-up process becoming slow.
  7. These programs run in the system background forever and cause your system performance to slow down.
  8. If there are programs you don’t use much, they probably don’t need to start every time Windows does.
  9. Identify them and disable them to achieve a better startup speed and system performance.
  10. For example, if you are not an active Skype user, you can disable Skype from automatically starting up once your system starts.
  11. Let me disable a number of other programs as well that I don’t use regularly.
  12. Make sure not to disable programs published by Microsoft Corporation, as these programs might be essential for running Windows.
  13. Do not disable the antivirus too.
  14. That’s it, we’re all done here. Now close the Task Manager, and let’s move on to some other things.

Step Number 3: Defragment and Optimize Drives

  1. Go to the Start menu and search defragment.
  2. Click on Defragment and Optimize Drives.
  3. You will see the window for Defragment and Optimize Drives.
  4. From here, select your system drive (usually the C drive).
  5. Click on Optimize.
  6. Your system drive will start optimizing.
  7. Once it’s finished, you can close this window.

Step Number 4: Delete Unnecessary Temporary Files

  1. Head over to the Start menu and right-click on the Windows icon.
  2. Choose Run from here.
  3. Type %temp% and click on OK.
  4. You will see the temporary files folder.
  5. Select everything in it and delete.
  6. Close the folder.
  7. Go to the Run box again by right-clicking on the Windows icon and choosing Run.
  8. Type temp and click on OK.
  9. A folder will appear, and you will see a dialogue box.
  10. Click on Continue.
  11. Select all the files in it, right-click, and delete.
  12. Go to Run again and this time type prefetch.
  13. Click on OK.
  14. You will find all these commands mentioned in the video description.
  15. You can copy and use them after you finish watching the video.
  16. Click on Continue and select everything to delete.
  17. After that, you can close the folder.

Step Number 5: Clean Up Memory

  1. Go to your File Explorer, right-click on your system drive or C drive or more specifically saying, where your Windows 10 is installed.
  2. And choose Properties from here.
  3. We are now on the General tab, here you will see the Disk Cleanup option.
  4. Just click on it! and allow it to scan the files.
  5. Now you can see the scanning is finished and you gonna wanna click on Cleanup system files and it will scan again.
  6. After the scan finished you will see this window.
  7. Now click on OK and it will ask you “Are you sure you want to permanently delete these files?”
  8. Click on OK (Delete files).
  9. Don’t worry it will only delete the unnecessary files, and what this is doing right now is cleaning all the unnecessary files in your system.
  10. Now the cleaning process has been done.

Step Number 6: Reduce Runtime Services

  1. For that first we wanna open the Run box by right-clicking on the Windows icon and choose Run.
  2. And you wanna type in msconfig, then click on OK and you will see this.
  3. And from here go to Services.
  4. Now you gonna wanna check on this box, Hide all Microsoft services.
  5. That’s really important, I don’t want you to delete any important things accidentally.
  6. So make sure you tick this option.
  7. Now click on OK.

Step Number 7: Registry Tweaks

  1. Now I will show you how to do some registry tweaks to speed up your Windows 10.
  2. First thing you gonna wanna do is launch the Run box again.
  3. For that head over to the Windows icon, right-click on it, and choose Run.
  4. Then type in regedit and click on OK.
  5. Now you will see this window.
  6. And from here you wanna go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
  7. Just click on it, and then go to Control Panel and then double-click on the Mouse folder.
  8. Now double-click on MouseHoverTime option and change its value to 10.
  9. Then click on OK.
  10. Now double-click on Desktop folder, scroll down a little bit, then double-click MouseShowDelay and change its value to 10, then click on OK.
  11. Now we just increased the mouse response time.
  12. To experience all this change you should wanna restart your system.

Step Number 8: Visual Effects

  1. In this final step we are gonna show you how to disable your Windows 10 interface graphical performance, to boost your system performance.
  2. And please note, it won’t affect your gaming graphics or your program graphics, it will only reduce the graphics performance of your Windows 10 OS.
  3. For example, after you do this you may feel loss in visual effects on your Windows 10.
  4. But it will improve your system performance to the maximum level.
  5. So the final decision is up to you, whatever it is, for the sake of the video, I will show you how to do it, try it on if you want.
  6. If you feel disappointed, you can always change it back to the normal stage later, so let’s start.
  7. Move on to your Start menu and search for System.
  8. Now click on it and you will get to this window.
  9. Now click on the Advanced system settings hyperlink on the left side.
  10. Then you will get to this small window, and here you will find this Settings button under Performance, Visual Effects, Processor Scheduling, Memory Usage, and Virtual Memory.
  11. Just click on this Settings button and you will get to this Performance Options window.
  12. These settings are basically everything that makes your Windows 10 look beautiful, as well as these are the main things that use your computer resources, like your RAM, processing power, and graphics as well.
  13. I only recommend this if you want the extreme performance that is possible with your machine.
  14. So let’s do it, click on Adjust for best performance option and you can see, it will automatically un-check all these settings.
  15. If you want, you can select some of the options that you can’t live without.
  16. For example, in my case, I would like to tick this option: Show shadows under mouse pointer.
  17. That’s it, once you’re done editing, just click on Apply and OK.
