Stellar Blade: The Ultimate PS5 Exclusive
One of my favorite PS5 exclusives that we’ve seen in 2024 is Stellar Blade. This had a lot of hype before it launched and for the most part, it lived up to that hype. I think it’s the perfect all-rounder game that looks good, plays well, and isn’t stupidly big that you never finish it. So, it’s set in a pretty stunning sci-fi world as you play as Eve, who’s been sent back to Earth to reclaim the planet which has been invaded. You’ve got various weapons which you need to unlock and acquire along the way, along with skills you can unlock and assign, all of which you will need to clear out the enemies and take down the various bosses. Unfortunately, you’re not alone as you do meet up with a couple of survivors who become your companions and then you also have your trusty drone. Now the main story itself is decent with a great mix of cutscenes, battles, and new characters popping up. But there’s also customization options for both Eve and your companions. These can all be found scattered around the map and can be unlocked as you play through. Also, I’ve got to point out how good the music is in this game. It’s only subtle but it’s one of the only games that I’ve kept the background music on throughout my entire playthrough. It really helps set the scene even when you’re just wandering around grabbing ammo or climbing towers. Now, this might sound ridiculous but it plays like a PS5 exclusive. It has that perfect balance of a good story, nice cinematics, incredible visuals, and smooth combat. And like with any game, there is a learning curve but once I picked this up and started playing, I didn’t touch another game until I completed it. Now the main story will take you around 20 to 25 hours to complete but if you want to go for the Platinum, you’re looking at around 50 to 70 hours. Also, if you’re on PlayStation Plus Premium, there is a game trial for Stellar Blade so you can check it out and see if it’s for you.
Good Side:
- Beautiful sci-fi world
- Engaging combat and customization
- Immersive music and story
- PlayStation Plus Premium trial available
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 20-25 hours
- Completionist: 50-70 hours
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: A Stunning JRPG Sequel
If you’re a JRPG fan then congrats we have got another installment of Final Fantasy this year which is named Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, this is the second entry in the new trilogy which is coming exclusively on the PS5, it includes some changes but they kept it fresh this project stays faithful to the original
If you played the 2020 remake, this one follows directly after that, where once again, you play as Cloud working alongside the gang. This game isn’t just on the list because it’s a PS5 exclusive or because it has stunning visuals, but because the combat and battle system are incredible—one of the best and most balanced battle systems we’ve had. Be prepared to put some serious time into this game; the campaign should take around 30 hours to finish, but for completing everything, including side missions, collectibles, and mini-games, expect to take about 100 to 130 hours. It’s also open world, so your Chocobo comes in handy. There’s a demo for this on the PlayStation Store, so definitely check it out.
Good Side:
- Faithful to the original with fresh changes
- Stunning visuals and improved battle system
- Open world with lots of exploration
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 30 hours
- Completionist: 100-130 hours
The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Post-Apocalyptic Thrills
If you’re a fan of The Last of Us series like myself, you might have missed the remaster we got earlier this year. Back in 2013, the original game was released on the PS3, then part two came to the PS4 in 2020. At the start of 2024, we finally got a remaster for part two on the PS5. Both games are set in a post-apocalyptic world where you have to travel across America through towns, forests, and sewers, all while trying to stay alive. Part one focuses on Joel and Ellie, while part two focuses on Ellie and Abby. The remaster hasn’t changed the main story but brought native PS5 features like 4K output in Fidelity mode, VRR, and faster loading times. It also makes full use of the DualSense features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, which weren’t available on the PS4 version. There are extra lost levels with new content and a new survival mode called No Return. If you’ve never played The Last of Us, now is definitely the time to pick it up. If you’ve played it before, it’s an excuse to replay on the PS5. If you already own the game, upgrading to the PS5 version is only £10 or $10. There’s also a game trial on the PS Store.
Good Side:
- Native PS5 features (4K, VRR, faster loading)
- Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers
- Extra lost levels and new character/weapon skins
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 20-25 hours
- Completionist: 30-40 hours
Helldivers 2: Thrilling Squad-Based Action
We couldn’t create a best list of PS5 games without Hell Divers 2. This is one of those games that took everybody by surprise when it launched and has only gotten better since. It’s a third-person squad-based game set on Superar, where you play as an elite class of soldiers called the Hell Divers. Your mission is to spread peace and liberty as you defend your planet from enemies. This game may look like a typical tactical team-based game, but it’s pretty gory, especially when blowing up monster bugs or accidentally blowing up your teammates. The game focuses heavily on the squad-based element, as you go into every mission with three others. You can team up with randoms as well, but the co-op tactical side of this game is a lot of fun. You start off by completing the training and then jump straight into battle. You can support and direct your squad into combat, complete sets of missions and objectives spread across the map, including rescuing, fighting, and destroying targets. You have a huge array of weapons to find and use, and you can upgrade your ship with better guns, modules, and accessories. There’s also a ranking system to level up, and the developers have been supporting it post-launch with new updates and patches. If you’re looking for a new online multiplayer game to play with your squad, definitely give this one a go.
Good Side:
- Fun co-op tactical gameplay
- Variety of weapons and customization
- Regular updates and new content
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 15-20 hours
- Completionist: 50-60 hours
Rise of the Ronin: Open World Samurai Adventure
Back in March, exclusive to the PS5, we got Rise of the Ronin. Set in Japan, it’s made by the same team behind the Neo games, so it has some similarities with its combat and pacing but stands on its own. It’s a third-person action-adventure game where you play as a Ronin, a samurai trained from a very young age. You’re actually a twin who’s been separated, part of the Twin Blades. As an assassin equipped with a sword, you explore the map, battle enemies, and follow the main story of overthrowing the monarch. Visually, it looks okay—more like a PS4 game than a PS5—but it’s smooth and the story is great. The combat and exploration of the open world are standout features. The combat is tight, difficult, and sometimes unpredictable; you can’t just use the same attack on every enemy as most of them have different weaknesses.
It lets you think more tactically. Even on the difficulty some missions are still hard. The open world lets you explore, climb up to the rooftops, glide through the air even lets you take your horse to the tracks. It’s a bit like Ghost of Tsushima in that sense although the visuals might not look like a typical PS5 game but the story and combat make it a really good PS5 title.
Good Side:
- Engaging story and combat
- Open world exploration
- Unique twin blades mechanic
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 25-30 hours
- Completionist: 60-80 hours
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown: A Modern Twist on a Classic
We’ve seen a sudden increase in side-scrolling platformer games in 2024, and one of the best released this year on the PS5 is Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It’s different from previous Prince of Persia games and more of a nod to the original.
You will play as SG As you make your way to the city to save the kidnapped prince while having various weapons which includes a pair of blades to defeat enemies along with time based powers, its not just some 2D games you see much often its ona different level
It plays smoothly and looks stunning, especially on a 4K monitor or TV with 120 FPS. The artwork and overall style make this game stand out, and it’s also one of the cheapest in today’s lineup. There’s a demo on the store if you want to check it out before committing.
Good Side:
- Vibrant graphics and immersive cinematics
- Smooth gameplay at 4K and 120 FPS
- Nostalgic yet modern feel
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 10-12 hours
- Completionist: 20-25 hours
Tekken 8: The Ultimate Fighting Game Experience
There are lots of fighting games out there like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter but Tekken 8 is on a different level so I added it as one of the best games to play right now on the PS5
It’s not just another fighting game polished with better graphics; it has a whole new look, feels like a proper game with a real story, and not just jumping from one fight to the next. The main story is set 6 months after the previous game, and each character has their episode to give more background and set the scene for each fight. Every character has been completely redesigned with improved attacking and defense moves and new voiceovers. The details and graphics of the character’s faces, clothes, and backdrops are incredible. It’s one of the best fighting games I’ve ever played and it’s unreal how well it plays on the PS5. There’s a demo on the store if you want to try it out first.
Good Side:
- Classic arcade feel with updated visuals and mechanics
- Individual episodes for each character
- Improved attack, defense moves, and voiceovers
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 8-10 hours
- Completionist: 20-30 hours
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth: Vibrant Open-World JRPG
Another big release earlier this year was Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. This is the ninth installment in the series and is a direct sequel to the 2020 game. Unlike the previous games, this one is set outside of Japan—in Hawaii. It’s bright, vibrant, and filled with a whole new wardrobe. You play as Ichiban Ciger, on the hunt to find his lost mother. Along the way, you meet up with other characters and party members who have returned from previous games. The game plays like the other games with the same combat system but has updated visuals and a brand new map to explore. It’s a long, open-world RPG with side missions and activities, and while it’s different from the usual Japanese setting, it’s still a lot of fun and very much worth playing.
Good Side:
- Bright and vibrant setting
- Open world with diverse activities
- Engaging turn-based combat
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 50-60 hours
- Completionist: 100-115 hours
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Massive Open World RPG
I actually cannot believe that this game only launched this year and that is Dragons Dogma 2. It feels like it was released years ago and I think Capcom have had a really good year so far with their G games and recent announcements. This is a massive open world third person action RPG which is a sequel to the 2012 title. It’s a narrative driven game where you need to navigate your way around the immersive world combating enemies and building your squad of Pawns, and these are your AI sidekicks which will help you during battles and help you solve challenges and puzzles. And when I say this game is massive, it really is. If you play the first one, you might be surprised to hear that the second one is four times the size and it’s split across two very different maps. So throughout the game you can customize your character enough that it will change the way that you play by choosing a vocation including a fighter, thief, or warrior and trickster. It will completely change the way your character handles combat from throwing smoke down to disorientate your enemies to long range attacks with a bow and arrow. This game should take around 30 to 40 hours to complete the main story, then around 70 to 100 hours to complete everything for that plat so this really is a big game.
Good Side:
- Huge world to explore
- Deep customization and variety in combat
- Engaging narrative and AI companions
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 30-40 hours
- Completionist: 70-100 hours
Persona 3 Reload: A Remake of a Classic RPG
Next up is Persona 3 Reload which launched back in February this year. It’s a remake of the 2006 RPG but this isn’t just a remaster. This has been built from the ground up. It’s got improved graphics, music, and even new voice acting. So you play as a high school teen who’s recently moved schools. By day you play as a good student by going to class and completing activities as well as making friends and working part-time. But by night you join forces with other students to fight evil during the Midnight Hour or the Dark Hour. During this hour the world is totally altered; it’s filled with monsters which you need to fight using turn-based combat and level up your player. You essentially use personas to fight the monsters. If you’ve ever played Persona 4 and 5 there are several elements that have been added to the remake, things like these social elements where you can interact and chat with residents and perform other tasks in the dorm. It is also very visually pleasing with great lighting textures and improved frame rates so it plays buttery smooth on the PS5 with up to 60 FPS and the option for 4K.
Good Side:
- Improved graphics, music, and voice acting
- Engaging social elements and turn-based combat
- Smooth performance on PS5
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 70-80 hours
- Completionist: 120-150 hours
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree: Expanding a Game of the Year
Okay so technically this game launched a couple of years ago but I’m going to include it in the 2024 games to play as the new DLC just dropped in June and that’s Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It’s a third person ARPG or an action role playing game set in a place called the Lands Between where the demigods roll over different regions. Now the base game actually won Game of the Year in 2022 and this new DLC expands on that with a whole new story, this time set in the Land of Shadow which has been obscured by the Erdtree. And it’s not just a new story; there’s a whole new map to explore which you can travel back and forth between. There’s also new weapons, equipment, skills, and enemies so it’s more than just another generic DLC. But it is worth mentioning that in order to play the Shadow of the Erdtree you do need to have first defeated the two main bosses. It makes sense though as it would break the narrative of the game and it would be too difficult to follow along with. FromSoftware also recommends to level up your characters to around 120 to 150 before even attempting the DLC purely because of the difficulty of those new enemies and new bosses. So yeah if you’ve played the original Elden Ring it’s definitely worth giving this DLC a go and if you’ve never played Elden Ring where you can buy this as part of a bundle now.
Good Side:
- New story and map
- Fresh weapons, skills, and enemies
- Requires base game completion
Time to Complete:
- Main story: 20-30 hours
- Completionist: 50-70 hours
All of those games launched in the first half of 2024 but there are still so many other games that are worth playing, especially if you’ve recently picked up a PS5 as you’ve got a lot of great games to catch up on but I’ve tried to keep the list to what I think are the best games to play right now. But tell me what your favorite game is, whether it’s from 2024 or any older titles. Now drop a “best PS5 games” in the comments and I’ll give you a thumbs up for staying right till the end.
